Abstract |
La Izvor Cave, La Baba Cave, X Cave In August 2009 the La Izvor and X Caves were excavated. In La Baba Cave excavations continued upper to trench from 2008.The excavations in two points (La Baba and La Izvor Caves) have verified the oldest data and has also yielded new results. In La Baba Cave in the largest part of the cave was lodged a rectangular trench. The stratigraphy of the excavated part of the cave is as in 2008: the rock bed; culturally sterile deposits of the yellow loess with small stones and fossils; rich in micro levels and the fireplace cultural levels (Neolithic: Hamangia, Gumelniţa Cernavoda); under the thick level, the different size stones with pottery and animal bones between were found (Late Bronze Age, Hallstatt; Babadag Culture); the next level which is partly destroyed by the medieval or modern pits, had a fireplace with Roman pottery; the upper levels close to ground surface were composed of thin micro-levels thick which can be dated to late mediaeval and modern times. In La Izvor Cave three tranches were made (both of them in the cave and one outside). In the first trench no artefacts found; this part was destroyed by bar existed in cave in 1990. In trench two traces of the Neolithic fireplaces were found with Neolithic pottery (Hamangia). On the border with old trench some Greek pottery were observed. In trench 3 outside the cave (in the entrance corridor) the levels with strong human occupation were found (mediaeval, Romano-byzantine, roman). On the rocks in the upper part we found elements of horse skeleton i.e. skull. In the pit located lower part of trench Romano-byzantine observed and human remains - pelvis as well as mandible in upper part. In trench 3 early mediaeval pottery as Saltovo-Majaki and white pottery with red engobe were found. In X Cave in from of the entrance to cave a rectangular trench were made. The stratigraphy: levels with large fireplaces. In the central place an artificial broken skull was discovered. Around the scull were small flat stones (limestone) and under pieces of the Romano-Byzantine amphorae. In the trench also Neolithic pottery was found but in secondary deposition.
